Based on the best-selling novel by writer Kent Haruf, the film follows the story of Addie Moore (Jane Fonda) and Louis Waters (Robert Redford), two widowed relatives who start an unexpected love affair. In Holt, a small town in Colorado, Addie makes an unexpected visit to her neighbor, Louis. Her husband died years ago, just like his wife, and in such a small town where they were neighbors for decades, the two had little contact with each other. Their children live far away, and they are alone in their large homes. Addie is trying to establish a connection with Louis and make the most of the rest of his time. To ease their loneliness, they begin to sleep platonic in the same bed, and gradually there is a true love story between the two.
