A thriller set up in the near future, Hotel Artemis (2018) follows the story of Jean Thomas, a nurse running a secret and exclusive hospital for the most sinister criminals in Los Angeles. Strong and precise, the assistant treats a variety of assassins, smugglers, thieves and gangsters in a state-of-the-art emergency room capable of delivering a new liver with a 3D printer or injecting a patient with nanobots that heal and restore cells from inside. With the help of her impressive assistant, Everest, Jean faces some of the world’s most dangerous criminals, from the French assassin Nice and the international Acapulco dealer to the Waikiki bank robbers. One night, when a violent revolt rises on the streets of Los Angeles, the legendary crime boss, Orian Franklin, alias Niagara, comes up with an urgent need for treatment after an attempted murder. Niagara’s sudden arrival creates a violent conflict among hospital offenders, while a “patient” has a particularly dangerous reason to enter the hotel. Assistance takes a decision that could jeopardize the future of the emergency hospital and all of it. Now, the safest place for criminals in the city has become the most dangerous.
